What is the difference between a lead and an opportunity?

A lead is part of a general data collected by way of a directory, event or advertisements. A lead may be part of your target segment, however there is no indication of potential for you to sell your product.

An opportunity on the other hand has an identified potential. Either a lead should be upgraded to an opportunity once potential is identified or an opportunity can be directly created if it was not updated as a lead earlier.
